Lamar offers a 36 hour (minimum) program leading to a Masters of Science in Deaf Edudation/Deaf Studies. Courses for a Texas teachers certificate (K-12) are also available. CMDS 5314 Literacy and Deafness
This course examines variables that influence a psychology of deafness, education options and a comparison of communication methodologies. Also included are descriptions of services provided by mental health professionals, educators and information for parents.
CMDS 5316 Bilingual Approaches and Deaf Students

This course covers current theory about bilingual/bicultural and second language approaches to language teaching and language learning for deaf students, including research that shows links between ASL learning and English literacy learning.
CMDS 5326 Psychology and Deaf People
This course covers theories of whole language, process writing and first and second language learning applied to deaf children learning how to read and write. Information on how to teach reading and writing using ASL, fingerspelling and codeswitching strategies are covered in this class including methods of assessment and activities to promote ASL and English literacy learning.
Doctoral Program
Lamar offers a 60 hour program leading to a doctorate (Ed.D) in Deaf Education/Deaf Studies. The purpose of this program is to prepare educational researchers and leaders in Deaf Education. CMDS 6301 History & Sociology of Deafness

Life/culture of Deaf people via history, art, literature, mythology, and performance. Using an anthropological definition of culture, the course examines the linguistic variations and modes of cultural transmission across generations and the demographic and characteristics of the community.
CMDS 6305 Psycholinguistics, Linguistics and Deafness

The psycholinguistics and linguistic development of deaf children of various linguistic and cultural backgrounds and the effects of communication modality differences upon development are covered. Emphasis upon the bilingual/bicultural nature of these acquisition patterns are included.
CMDS 6306 Contemporary Issues in Deaf Education
This course covers current issues in deaf education including inclusion, changing demographics of deaf community, magnet schools, role of deaf professionals, cochlear implants, criminality and legal rights, and other contemporary issues in deaf education.
CMDS 6308 Cognition, Intelligence & Psychosocial Development & Deafness
Historical review of the way intellectual abilities of deaf persons are viewed, current data on cognitive and intellectual abilities, psycho-social development of deaf persons and appropriate assessment tools will covered.
CMDS 6350 Proposal and Grant Writing
This course covers the technical aspects of writing the dissertation including format, style and content. Grantsmanship skills are also covered as are other professional writing skills including how to write the journal article, textbook chapter, textbook, a letter to the editor etc.
